A Standout leather coat makes those winter days Shine!
Our “Glitter Bomb-er” is piece that was really inspired by the leather.
I sourced this glittery black leather a long time back, from a company that used to get close-out goods from the Couture Houses in Europe. Quite a bit ahead of the current trend for shine that’s re-surging after so many years. (Metallic and Shiny leather – in Garments, was very big in the early to mid-1990s) But now my vendors stock versions this glitter look leather in a wide range of colors. I’ve even used it in a stretch version.
It’s a deceptive finish – there is no actual glitter involved. (So, no evidence left behind!) Instead, the leather is highly textured, giving the effect of glitter. It also wears beautifully. Over time the shine softens and light distressing appears, adding to the depth and beauty of the leather.
I thought this leather was was perfect for a longer coat, it had a really great drape but I needed to keep it somewhat casual in cut – especially with this admittedly over the top finish.
I’ve always been drawn to unique finishes, especially interesting shiny ones, from all my years working with Patricia Field, as well as creating for a lot of different musicians and performers. I also have always loved Statement pieces – Coats especially – I mean, when you’re in a city where so many people walk, what better way is there to express yourself on a daily basis? Plus in the winter it’s fun to brighten things up a bit – and that doesn’t always mean that it has to be a vivid color. Cool finishes like this are another great opportunity to shine.
In NYC, when you see someone walking down the street using their sartorial choices to say something and make a statement, it just feels good. You see people start to smile and that feeling is infectious.
I am a firm believer that you can never have too many standout coats!
I based this coat on a classic “Bomber” jacket shape. Added a dramatic flared skirt with a nipped ribbed waist, oversized military pocket details, and the classic zipper detailing, and voilá. The ‘Glitter Bomb’. I also deepened the collar and the cuffs to balance everything out. (The collar doubles as a muffler when the bomber coat is fully zipped up.) And, of course, I used my own ‘take’ on ribbed trim – made up in a soft patent lambskin leather.
To finish it off, the bomber coat is lined with a black flannel-backed satin, aka “Sunback”. This lining is an absolutely great option for any leather coat. Especially if you want something you can wear through a real winter. It adds some weight, but hardly any bulk. What it does add is a great deal of warmth.
In combination with the wind-blocking nature of leather it makes this Glitter bomber coat perfect for NY winters. Add just a thin layer of cashmere or wool and it can take you thru those really cold old-school winter days.
