About Carla Dawn Behrle
There is an artistry to Carla Dawn Behrle’s leather creations that seamlessly blends costume expression and couture craftsmanship. Carla is obsessed with leather and all that it embodies – from its material characteristics to its power to evoke and transform.
“Modern leather comes in many, many forms,” she says. “And while it might seem inherently dark, I’d like to think that my designs embrace its protective, self-confident, and even fetishistic aspects.”
“The material itself carries a complex dichotomy about weakness and strength, luxury and ruggedness, softness and hardness, the hunter and the hunted, inner and outer worlds and passivity and aggressiveness. These characteristics lie at the heart of identity today. Leather carries a wide range of historical and cultural references, at once ancient and contemporary, utilitarian and patrician.”
“More often than not, an inexplicable symbiotic bond forms between the wearer and the leather… the leather ages and takes on a new character as a “second-skin”; together they share and create an evolving story over time.”
By the time she was 17, Carla Dawn Behrle was the youngest person in history to be inducted to the Scenic Artists Union. Taking with her a deep understanding of costume history and impeccable tailoring skills, she segued into the tactile, sensuous world of couture leather, and the fashion-forward set took notice.
Over the years, her unique vision, attention to detail and unparalleled craftsmanship have attracted the likes of Bono, Madonna, Joan Jett, J-Lo, Steve Tyler, The Edge, Angelina Jolie, Alicia Keys, Susan Sarandon, Mary J. Blige, Julia Roberts, Britney Spears and Usher, among many other notable celebrities.
